McCall eager for United to put cup defeat behind them

JOE McCall pointed to inexperience among his Ballymoney United young guns after they crashed out of the WKD Intermediate Cup to Donegal Celtic on Saturday.

The local lads trailed 1-0 at the break to DC in the quarter final clash but conceded another four goals in a second half which also saw Denver Gage dismissed.

Ballymoney should have been hosting the Belfast side but as Glebe were due to play at the Riada Stadium against Ballinamallard United, the game had to be switched to Suffolk Road.

“In the first half I felt we were as good as them,” McCall told Times Sport.

“But in the second half we just didn’t compete which was really disappointing.

“They are a big strong side and our inexperience showed in the second half.

“However 5-0 was not a fair result, 3-0 might have been.

“I’ve absolutely no complaints with them getting the win as we didn’t deserve to get anything out of the game on the day.

“Hopefully it can be a learning experience.”

McCall said he wasn’t happy with the fixture being switched away from the Riada Stadium but said his focus is now on the next match which is likely to be at home to Carrick Rangers.

“I’m not happy but we have to get on with it,” he said.

“Carrick will be a tough game.

“We had a really good game up there earlier this season which finished 2-2.

“I would expect goals in it.

“Anybody can beat anybody on their day in this league.

“If I was a betting man I would say a draw again but I wouldn’t want a draw to be fair.”

Ballymoney’s match with Carrick was due to take place this Saturday but has been postponed due to the WKD Intermediate tie between Carrick and Limavady United.

Ballymoney v Carrick may now be played the following Tuesday or Wednesday.

United will look to line-up a friendly fixture on Saturday afternoon.
