McCall praises 'fantastic' players

BALLYMONEY United boss Joe McCall has praised his players following United's excellent 1-0 victory away to Ballinamallard United on Saturday which secured them joint sixth position in the league this season on points.

Despite the limited resources available to United compared to many of their counterparts, McCall's young team battled all season to improve on last year's eighth place finish.

And the Blues capped off the season in style with all three points at the weekend courtesy of a Lee Clelland strike.

Speaking to Times Sport, the United boss described his team's efforts as "fantastic".

"It was an excellent result on Saturday," he said.

"I feel it was a fair result too and I am delighted with where we have finished in the league.

"It is a fantastic achievement at that level and the players have to take the credit for that.

"Since I came here four-and-a-half years ago the squad has progressed every year.

"This season is particularly satisfying as it was a transitional one for us.

"We have focused on bringing in younger players and local players.

"The foundations for the future are firmly in place.

"Anyone wanting to come in to manage the club would find good, young players here.

"The club is certainly on a good footing at present."

McCall paid tribute to captain Gareth Hill who announced he would be stepping down from playing at that level of football at the club's annual dinner on Saturday night.

He said: "Gareth has been here 10 years and has been an outstanding captain since I have been here.

"He is a good player and a good professional.
