McCarter set teenagers challenge

FOYLE and Londonderry cricket coach Gerald McCarter will be warning his players not to underestimate Sullivan Upper, in this afternoon (Friday 2.30pm) Ulster Bank Schools' Cricket Cup Final.

McCarter believes although his side will start the game as favourites they can't afford to be over confident.

"They (Sullivan Upper) have a few boys who are in the Ulster Schools' squad, so we know we'll be facing a good side," he said.

"At the end of the day whoever you meet in a final is always going to be good. Having said that we have a good team ourselves, but we need to deliver the goods on the day."

McCarter also admitted that he set this group of students a challenge to become the second Foyle side to retain the prestigious trophy.

"We won the cup four times in five years in the mid-80's and that is the challenge I set this year's team, to try and retain the cup, because winning the Schools' Cup is great, but to be able to retain is a great achievement."

For five of the teenagers - Nick Donnell, David Murdock, Graeme McCarter, Christopher Campbell and Matthew Gillespie - they are looking to complete a remarkable cup double.

The lads played their part in Foyle's Northern Bank Ulster Schools' Rugby Bowls Final win over Grosvenor Grammar in February and McCarter believes it would be a nice way to finish the year with another piece of silverware.

"There are five of the boys who won the rugby cup final a few months ago, while Nick who is our captain finishes at Foyle this year, so it would be nice if he could complete the rugby and cricket double."
