McCoist in high praise for Shiels

Rangers Manager Ally McCoist spoke last night of his delight at Dean Shiels’ debut for the club.

Shiels was on the scoresheet as the Gers hammered East Fife 4-0 in the Scottish Communities League Cup at Ibrox.

“I’m delighted that we managed to sign one of the best players in Scotland last season, one of Kilmarnock’s best and one of the top players at Hearts as well Ian Black),” McCoist said.

“It’s encouraging that these players wanted to come here.”

Shiels made it a perfect debut in 33 minutes when he flicked the ball over the advancing Michael Brown after Barrie McKay’s shot had been blocked.

McCoist was relieved following the club’s first game at Ibrox of the new season last night.

“I was really pleased with everything – the performance both as a team and individually – and the fantastic crowd,” he added.

“It was an amazing attendance. Out of the madness of the past few months the fans have been a bonus. Tonight meant a lot to everyone at the club.”

The kick-off was delayed for fully 19 minutes to allow the huge crowd of 38,160 to take their seats.”
