McConville to ponder his future

Following the exit from this seasons Ulster series Shane said, “As things stand I don’t know whether I will be taking the job next year. Over the next couple of weeks I will take a step back and reflect on things and make a decision.”

The players at St. Paul’s would certainly be delighted if Shane decided to remain in charge of the Lurgan club who completed a unique double this season winning the Second Division title and the Intermediate Championship, although many local fans would be surprised to hear the current Saints boss is considering his future in Senior management.

McConville said there was a lot more to St. Paul’s than him. “It’s not all about Shane McConville. Gerry (Headley) and Finty (McConville) have been at the forefront of things as have the Clubs Committee and supporters who have been fantastic all year, it was tough on the players last Sunday but I couldn’t fault one of them for their efforts throughout a long campaign.”

St. Paul’s were beaten by a point in their Ulster opener by Fermanagh club Derrylin, but the Lurgan side will be remembered for their performances throughout the domestic campaign and now according to the Taghnevan manager the huge task of remaining in Division 1 next season takes centre stage.

Shane added,“It will take another huge effort next season to maintain a top flight status. If I believe another manager will be better at the job than me then I would gladly hand things over.

“This is my third year with the team, in the modern game you have to put the proper training regimes in place and prepare for matches in a proper fashion, it takes a lot of commitment from both players and management, to be honest I don’t know how I will fell around Christmas.”
