McCormick making waves in motocross

GLENO teenager Glenn McCormick took part in the sixth round of the British Youth Motocross Championship at Brampton, Cumbria recently.

Riding in the BW 85 cc class the Larne High School pupil had high hopes after achieving a 7th place overall finish in Dean Moor in June and a podium placing of sixth overall in Finningley, Yorkshire in mid July.

But with mechanical problems in qualifying, he completed just three laps of the track and qualified 16th. But he was able to produce great starts giving himself the best possible chance of running at the front of each race.

He finished fifth in Race One and, despite a heavy fall, he showed great determination in Race Two, to remount his KTM to take a 16th place finish, being almost a lap down on the rest of the field.

Glenn was positive going into the second day and pulled out all the stops to take fifth, ninth and fifth place finishes respectively.

He showed great determination throughout the entire weekend and was disappointed that he was forced into an error and dropped his machine in the fourth race in a battle with the front runners.

However, he was delighted to finish the weekend in eighth position and was awarded the Dunlop Prize for the Best Performing Rider in his class that is currently not under a tyre contract.

This year McCormick is competing in the MRA Ireland Ulster and Irish Championships which takes him all over Ireland. With only two rounds remaining in the Irish competition and one in the Ulster, the Larne lad tops both leaderboards.

He is has also been riding locally in the Norman Watt Grasstrack Championship being promoted by the Carrickfergus and District MCC Ltd. and is currently holding first place.

Glenn expressed his sincere thanks to everyone who has wished him well and to those who have followed his racing throughout the year. He now gets a well-earned break for the next few weeks in preparation for the run in to the end of the season.
