McCormick stars with bat

A SUPERB innings of 92 not out by Matthew McCormick, batting at number ten for Lurgan Seconds, turned what seem to be a certain defeat into an astonishing victory over Holywood on Saturday.

Sitting at 78 for eight, the four league points seemed on their way down the M1 as McCormick strode to the crease to join Peter Maxwell with still over 120 runs needed for victory.

Matthew played some beautiful shots as he cracked boundaries to all parts of the ground while Peter Maxwell played a vital supporting role, finishing on 59 not out to steer the Town side home with two wickets and three balls to spare.

Earlier Holywood had posted a very respectable 205 for six wickets in their 50 overs with Town skipper Andrew Bingham the main wicket taker with three for 27.

In a re-arranged league game two days earlier, the Town side recorded another nail biting win, this time at Muckamore.

Batting first, Lurgan set the home side a target of 158 to win with Peter Haire top scoring on 47 not out.

The home side were stopped seven runs short of this total with only two balls to spare. A blend of youth and experience saw pace bowler Matthew McCormick take three for 29 and spinner Paul Stafford three for 27 while skipper Andrew Bingham had a literally a hand in five of the dismissals taking four catches and getting a run out in what proved to be a very entertaining game.
