McCracken tops Junior leaderboard after second autograss round

THE weather was kind enough to allow the Down Autograss Club's second race day to go ahead, with a few locals heading the results.

In the Junior category it was the Kinallen driver Scott McNeill who scored consistently in the heats and ended the weekend with a fine drive from third to first in the final. This result left him with an overall win from the day and catapultes him up to second in the Junior championship. Loughbrickland racer Jonny McCracken sits on top of the leaderboard after two meetings with a win at round one and a second at the weekend, impressive in his second season of racing.

Elsewhere, last year’s champion Christopher McCracken, Jonny’s elder brother, has had a poor start to the new season.

At round one he had a non-score in a heat and the final due to mechanical failures, and severely damaged the car in the first run of the final at the weekend. He now lies fifth in the championship and has a lot of work to do if he wishes to retain his title.

In men’s class one James Jess took an overall win after a neck and neck final with brother Matt, under pressure from the first corner right to the finish line and racing side-by-side for the majority of the race.

This brings James up to joint second in the championship now, after a few first day teething problems with his new car dropped him to third. Matt retains first place in the championship after a win at round one and a second at the weekend.

Round three of the championship is on Saturday May 8 at the Maghaberry based racetrack. For more info go to www.downautograss.com
