McCrum does enough to secure second place

FOLLOWING a poor start to the Youth Ulster Motocross Championship, Jordanstown's Jay McCrum was back on form at round four of the series at Desertmartin, Co Londonderry at the weekend.

An untimely nose bleed ruled the 12-year-old out of a full qualifying session but a determined Jay did manage one full lap, enough to secure a second place to TAS Suzuki mounted, Stuart Simpson.

In race one Jay led from start to finish closely followed by Drogheda’s Dylan Coffey and Yamaha of series leader James Mackrell in third. In race two it was Simpson who was first to the chequered flag closely followed by Jay in second and Mackrell in third. Quickly calculating the points Jay knew that a win in race three would hasten his aspirations to lead the championship. Despite the worsening weather conditions the Belfast Royal Academy first year pupil pushed his ‘fon-a-cab’ KTM machine to the front - with consistently fast lap times. Jay went on to win the race from Simpson in second and Londonderry’s Joshua McCorkell in third.

He said: “I am so happy to be leading the Ulster Championship – I was not at all confident today given the wet conditions but once again my Bridgestone tyres got me the starts I needed and kept me the right side up all day.”

Jay now focuses his attention on his first exam on Friday after which he will be setting off for round 4 of the Irish championship at Vernonmount in Cork, Ireland on Saturday.
