McGinn bags fourth club title

Ballycastle Golf Club Competition Report

FRANCIS McGinn secured his fourth Club Championship title at Ballycastle Golf Club on Saturday.

In difficult, breezy conditions, he completed his first round in 72 shots and matched this score again in the afternoon for a winning two round total of 144.

Francis first won the Club Championship at Ballycastle in 2002 and has followed this with victories in 2005, 2007 and now in 2010 to move him high in the all time list of Shangarry Cup winners.

Only John Boyd (six wins), Frank Fleming senior and Donal McCormick (five wins each) have won more Club Championships in the history of Ballycastle Golf Club.

Second place in the Shangarry Cup on Saturday went to Neil McMaster with rounds of 70 and 75. Defending champion Patrick Dallat finished in third place after rounds of 72 and 74. John Callan took fourth with a 73 and 76 and Rory McCormick was fifth with rounds of 78 and 72.

Owen Kennedy won the prize for the best 1st 18 score with a 74 and Hugh Sayers won the 2nd 18 prize also with a gross 74.

In Saturday’s Shangarry Plate competition, Ian McIlrath, playing off nineteen, was the winner with an excellent nett 65. Brian Cunning finished in second place with a nett 66 and Seamus Killough was third, also with a nett 66. Dennis Devine took fourth spot with a nett 69 and Harry Sheehan was fifth, also with a nett 69.

The Dunrainie Mixed Foursomes was held at the club on Sunday with Mary T. McKiernan and Francis McGinn combining well once again to win this competition for the second year running with a total of 38 points. It has been a very successful few days for them with Francis winning on Saturday and Mary T. along with Jenny Parkhill and Jenny Duncan winning the R.N.L.I. Ladies Scramble competition on Friday.

Second place in Sunday’s Mixed Foursomes went to Margaret and Willis McWhirter with 37 points.

The Gents Stableford competition on Sunday was won by Sean Brogan with 43 points, one clear of Peter Dowds in second place. John Armstrong took third with 40 points and Gabriel McCollum was fourth with 39 points.

The timesheet for Mr. Leo McIlroy’s Captains Day goes online this Thursday 12th August at 4pm. Captain’s Day itself is on Saturday 21st August with the presentation of prizes and entertainment arranged for the evening.

The August Monthly Medal takes place at the club next Saturday 14th August with an Open Charity Team Stableford competition to raise funds for N.I. Cancer Care scheduled for Sunday.

A Men’s End of Season Day Out to Ardglass Golf Club has been organised for Friday 27th August.
