McGrane dominates Prehen Pro-Am

FRESH from playing in the Scottish Open at Lough Lomond, top Irish professional, Damien McGrane, produced the goods to land the annual McCambridge-Duffy Pro-Am event at City of Derry last weekend.

McGrane, currently ranked 158 in the world, posted rounds of 67, 67 and a course record equalling 64 in the final round on Sunday at Prehen to set the lowest winning aggregate score of 198 (15 under par) to win by four shots.

In fact, the record had been set 24 hours earlier by Waterville (Co. Kerry) professional, David Higgins, who finished in the runners-up spot on 11 under having returned rounds of 68, 64 and 70 for a three round total of 202.

Team Ireland sponsored professional, Simon Thornton, finished in third on 8 under, one shot clear of local North-West professional, Michael McGeady (69, 67 and 70) who took fourth spot.

The superb condition of the Prehen course fashioned top scoring and, indeed, the visiting professionals regularly complimented the quality of the course and indeed, the organisation of the event.

Meanwhile, in the hugely popular team event, City of Derry members, Tony McCann (14), 76-years-old Barney McDaid (15) and the Prehen club’s PRO, Martin Doherty (20) combined with Killymoon’s resident professional, Gary Chambers, to take the team honours with 278 points.

Consistent rounds of 94, 93 and 91 saw them finish four points clear of the main sponsors’ team of Colm Duffy, Rosie Short and Maurice McGettigan with rounds of 88, 95 and 91.
