McGuckin into individual last four

THIS season’s Cookstown Snooker Open Individual which is kindly being sponsored by Pot Black Snooker Club has reached the quarter-finals stages.

Paul McGuckin who in his long career in the Cookstown league has only won this tournament twice and going by all reports he’s hungry to get his third title in this Open individual. in the last eight pairing Paul was drew against Declan Callan who is a formidable player on a pool table but snooker is a different kettle of fish. Declan had a game plan but things didn’t go according to plan as Paul easily won 3-0 with breaks of 35,36 and 38.

The next match up was John Halferty and James Winters from Dungannon. John is very consistent while James is a pure potter which proved an interesting match as they shared the opening four frames. The deciding frame went down to the wire with John Halferty clearing up the final few colours to book his place in the semi-final stage.

The third match was between Joe Loughran and Seamus Quinn. Joe was narrowly beaten by Brian Milne in the final last year and was going to be up against it again, when he was drew out to play Seamus Quinn from Coalisland. Joe started well but Seamus has alot of experience which paid dividends as he took the first. In the next, Joe kept his focus on the game with a brilliant clearance from the brown to level the score at 1-1.

Seamus is a very steady player as he proved by taking the next two frames to book his place in the semi-finals.

The final match was a non-starter when Joe McGarrity due to work commitments was unable to play Micky Quinn who goes straight into the semi-finals. This contest over five frames would certainly have been a close match but alas it wasn’t to be. Celestine Loughran from Pot Black made the draw which was as follows:

Semi-Final Draw

Micky Quinn v Seamus Quinn

Paul McGuckin v John Halferty
