McIntyre wins Wilkies

FOYLE Valley’s popular annual run/walk in memory of their late colleague Colm Wilkinson took place last night (Thursday) along the usual course ‘out the line’ at the Brandywell.

The scenic course along the River Foyle using the cycle path is a fast, flat and accurately measured test for the serious and not so serious runner alike.

This year’s event attracted an entry of over 120 competitors. On a rather hot evening for running the competitors lined up at 7.30pm for the out and back five mile course.

First across the line was Foyle Valley athlete Pius McIntyre who added to his recent successes with an impressive run of 26 minutes and 41 seconds. Pius had a comfortable cushion over the second place man Eirin McDaid in 27 minutes and 10 seconds. Another Foyle Valley athlete made up the podium with Chris McGuinness coming in third in 27 minutes and 26 seconds.

The ladies race was won in impressive style by City of Derry Spartan runner Catherine Lilburn in a time of 32 minutes exactly. Catherine had a comfortable lead over her nearest rival, Foyle Valley’s Martina McMullan who clocked 33 minutes and 5 seconds. Martina also won her age category prize. City of Derry Spartan Miriam Bridge came third in 33 minutes and 13 seconds.

Full results can be viewed on the Foyle Valley Athletic Club’s web site.

The walk this year was not as well attended as in previous years but well done to all those who took part. All proceeds from the event will as is usual be donated to local charities in Colm Wilkinson’s memory.
