McQuillan leads the way at Ballycastle

WEEK Two of the P.J. McIlroy & Sons Winter League saw some more excellent scoring over the 13 holes of the competition. Saturday’s competition got the best of the weather and over 90 players participated.

In Section 1 Lawrence McQuillan (13) produced the best score of the weekend with 31 points to take first place from Paul Surgenor (11) on 29 points with Liam McGonagle third on 28 points ahead of Steven McGarry and Gerry McGouran who also scored 28.

Kevin Traynor (18) continued his excellent form from the previous week to top Section 2 on 28 points despite failing to score at the 18th hole. His back 9 of 20 points just pipped James Shirley (17) who also had 28 points with Chris McCloskey (17) a point further back in third.

Sunday morning’s conditions were much less inviting early on and a much smaller field braved the elements. However, Declan McCarry (15) who has started strongly in the New Year, recorded a very creditable 30 points to take first place from Donal Gillan (16) on 28 points with Owen Kennedy (6) taking third place on 27 on a better back nine from Damian McSorley.

In the Teams Competition, Team Shangarry captained by Declan McCarry lead by 1 point on 21 points from Alan McCook’s Team Bonamargy with Team Valencia in third spot on 17 points under the captaincy of Leonard McCormick.

At the bottom of the table Mark McPoland’s Team Atlanticcould only muster 3 points to add to their 1 from the first week and are looking to be in danger of collecting the wooden spoons. Mark will no doubt be having a serious chat to his team before next weekend.

In the best individual competition the 2 times winner Kevin Traynor is joint leader on 58 points with Declan McCarry. Owen Kennedy sits in third on 54 points.

In the Wednesday Open Liam Gallagher had an excellent 40 points over 16 holes followed by Declan McCarry on 39 and Mark Herald on 38.

Visitors are very welcome on Wednesdays for a bargain fee of £10.
