Medal joy for Lisburn judo stars in South Africa

There was medal joy for Lisburn's Simply Judo club members recently when they competed in South Africa.

The Northern Ireland Judo team recently returned from ‘The Commonwealth Championships’ in South Africa.

Following 10 months of qualifying tournaments attended across the UK and Europe, 12 Northern Ireland Judoka qualified to represent NI at the various age bands.

Simply Judo Members from Lisburn & Castlereagh Club occupied six of those 12 places qualified: Matthew Elliott - U16 & U20 Team; Dan Mayhew - U20 Team; Victoria Culhoon - U20 & Senior Team; Kirsty Kee - Senior Team; Mark Montgomery - Grand Master Team & Commonwealth Team Assistant Coach; Ross Scott - Senior Team; Scott Mayne Simply Judo Belfast - Commonwealth Team Head Coach.

The Lisburn club returned with four silvers and one gold.

Medal winners were Kirsty Kee - Silver, Mark Montgomery - Silver, Dan Meyhew - Silver and Matthew Elliott - U16 Gold & U20 Silver.

Head Coach, Mark Montgomery said: “These are remarkable results for ‘Simply Judo’. As head coach of Lisburn I’m extremely proud that our club not only made up the majority of the NI Team, but to have added Commonwealth Championship Gold won in South Africa to the Irish and British Championships our Junior Club Members have already won in the last 12 months.

“With members competing for GB in Spain and Portugal already in 2016 we have others selected to compete in Switzerland during the summer.

“Following the medal success at these Commonwealth Championships in South Africa, both myself and Scott Mayne (our head coach in Belfast) are already looking forward with great expectations to the 2022 Commonwealth Games where medal success for our club is expected.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank LCCC who gave grants to two of our members through Sport Lisburn to help finance the travel to South Africa and to our Mayor who continues to support Sport and Judo in the city.”
