Meet the Foyle & Londonderry College squad

Foyle & Londonderry College rugby coach David Barnett gives us a low down on his side, who face Banbridge Academy, in the Danske Bank Schools’ Bowl Final, today (Wednesday KO 2.30pm).

Mr Barnett, who along with Mr Ray Menown have been working with the boys all season and they hope they can perform on the big stage at Dungannon RFC.

Mr Barnett gives us the low down on his 24 man squad who are all hoping to get a place in the starting line-up this afternoon.

Sam McCord (Prop) - Sam is in his final year of school. Throughout junior school he played back row and over the last two years he has become a very influential front row player.

Fraser Millen (Hooker) - Fraser is in his final year. Last season he was captain of the 2nd XV. This season he has been a regular in our 1st XV. He is a versatile player, playing at prop or hooker, getting through a lot of unseen work at the breakdown.

Christopher Love (Prop) - Christopher is in his final year of school. He has been a regular in the 1st XV this season. His throwing ability at the lineout is crucial along with his powerful carries.

Kevin Callaghan (Second Row) - Kevin is also in his final year. This is his second year in the 1st XV. Kevin is a key player in our lineout and is a good defender. He adds to the back row with his work at the breakdown.

Lee Brady (Second Row) - Lee is Year 13 at school. He can play second row or back row. He was captain of our Medallion XV three years ago. Lee is a very athletic player and is known for his strong ball carrying and big tackles.

Niall Adair (Flanker) - Niall is Year 14 and this is his third season in the 1st XV team. He is also our vice captain. Niall’s work in the loose is excellent and he excels over the ball at the breakdown.

Hayden Campbell (Flanker) - Hayden is in Year 14 and he is the most versatile player in the squad. He can play second row, back row, and has played several positions in the backline.

Patrick Leeson (Number 8 & Captain) - Patrick is in Year 14, and captain. This is his third season in the 1st XV. A very influential player with an extremely high work rate. Patrick leads by example when playing, and inspires many of his team mates.

Michael Rankin (Scrum Half) - In his second year on the 1st XV, Michael is now one of the more senior members of the squad. As a key member of the team, his communication between the backs and forwards is vital to the team’s success.

Alex McDonnell (Out Half) - Alex has been one of the most influential players for the team in the lead up to the final. His kicking abilities from both the tee and out of hand have been significant to the team’s success all year.

Philip Carroll (Centre) - Phillip has been playing in the centre all year. He has formed an excellent centre partnership with Mark Wilson, with both being particularly strong in defence. Philip is also an excellent communicator.

Mark Wilson (Centre) - Mark plays at outside centre. As well as being very strong in defence, Mark is a strong ball carrier and often makes line breaks.

Gary McKinley (Wing) - Gary has been in fine try scoring form this season. His speed and quick acceleration means that he has also been able to score a number of interception tries.

Jack McNeill (Wing) - Jack started the year with the 2nd XV but after scoring several tries was moved to the 1st XV. His main attributes are his speed and strength and he is a part of a very good back three.

Robbie House (Full Back) - Robbie is in Year 13 and is exceptional under the high ball, and is also a strong counter-attacking runner. His communication from full back is also important in defence.

Callum Watson (Prop) - Callum has been a valued member of the 1st XV squad this year and works well at training. He can play on either side of the scrum so is useful as front row cover.

Callum McDonnell (Hooker) - As a Year 12 Callum has settled in well at 1st XV level. He is particularly effective in the scrum, getting a great strike on the ball. Callum was also involved in the Ulster Under 17 development squad in the summer.

Sam McCloskey (Hooker/Back Row) - Sam is a versatile player within the pack, his main strength is in the tackle and Sam is renowned for getting around the pitch.

Stephen Walker (Second Row) - Stephen is in Year 13 and has made great strides this year. He is a good lineout operator and gets through a lot of work on the pitch.

Faolan Hanna (Second Row/Back Row) - Faolan is in Year 14 and is captain of the 2nd XV. He has been an excellent leader remaining cool under pressure and has good organisational skills.

Jack Taylor (Scrum Half) - Jack is the scrum half for the 2nd XV and a very good one at that. He is a very bright, up coming prospect for Foyle rugby and will be a key member to the 1st XV next year.

Andrew McElhatton (Out Half/Centre/Wing) - Andrew is an adaptable back having played a variety of different positions when required this season. His experience as a utility back makes him a key member of the squad.

David Jackson (Centre/wing) - David is only in Year 12 and will be a force to be reckoned with in years to come - at the minute he is playing centre for the 2nd XV. He is not intimidated by the much older and bigger opposition he comes up against on a regular basis and loves to get into the game.
