It may have been April Fool’s Day but there certainly was no fooling about from Mel Hylands.

He was not deterred by the bitterly cold wind and the bumpy conditions. Mel is a better than average 12 handicapper and he won the competition with 40 stableford points. He really came good over the second nine holes which he played in 35 shots highlighted by a two at the tricky 15th hole.

John Redpath (12) was runner-up with 39 points. It’s very difficult to go round the course without a serious mistake but John must have rued the triple bogey six he took at the 10th hole. That cost him victory.

Roland Harwood (14) was third, also with 39 points.

And the final prize, for fourth place, went to Graham Shannon (21) with 38 points.

Seamus McGrath (17) and Dominic McArdle (21) came close with scores of 37 and 36 points respectively.

But the hero of the day was Mel Hylands. Thankfully, he remembered to put his card in the competitions box. Seemingly he was heading home with the card in his hip pocket when his carer, Colin Kennedy, spotted it. It’s great to have friends who look out for you.
