Memorable night for Wheelers as Wilkinson goes fastest again

LAST Tuesday night was one of those nights you remember for a long time.

It was a 10 mile TT on the Warrenpoint/Newry circuit for the Poppy McKeown Memorial run by West Down Wheelers.

A total of 27 riders from eight different clubs took part. There was some cracker times recorded with three personal bests recorded on the night.

The fastest Wheeler was once again was Paul Wilkinson with a superb 21.57. To do a 21 minute ride takes some doing and no one else in the club has done it yet.

Second Wheeler on the night and only 24 seconds slower than Paul with a 22.20 was a rider who is having his best season yet in Mark Alexander. Mark’s time was another superb effort and no doubt he is capable of a 21 minute ride.

Third Wheeler on the night with a 22.59 was the aul’ man himself, Clive Adamson, and boy was he pleased. He said to do that time at 52 meant more to him than doing it for the first time 15 years ago.

Fourth rider was another surprise. Ian Walker’s time of 23.40 was good enough for him to win the Poppy McKeown on Handicap.

Some other Wheelers times worth a mention were J Kernaghan’s 23.59, D Cartmill’s 23.58 and P McKinstry’s 24.54.

One man who was well chuffed was C Hodgen. His time of 24.57 was a PB for him so he’s improving each week.

Race secretary Clive said, “We had one 21, two 22s, two 23s and two 24s on the night which is very pleasing. I told them at the start of the year they would have a 23 minute ride under their belts and now they are starting to believe in themselves.

“We have riders now who, after a good Winter’s training, can do very well in the open races next year and this is something we will work at and make sure they are prepared for.

“But there’s an old saying - you can bring a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. I hope the riders I’m thinking of will be up for the test; I’m well prepared to do my bit and I’m sure they will too as they are a good bunch of lads.”

Club Chairman Billy Maxwell was delighted with the times. He said, “These are the kind of nights which make it all worthwhile. I’m well pleased with all their efforts.”

The club’s attention is now focused on the Katesbridge GP which consists of an open race for all third and fourth riders as well as vets. Next year this will change as a separate race for fourths will be held.

This year a new cup will be presented to the winner, the Maxwell Cup and many thanks go to Billy.
