Men’s hockey section gets ready for new campaign

PRE-season is now underway as Ballymena Hockey Club prepares for an exciting new year ahead.

After a spell of fitness training at Tardree Forest, the men’s section are back training at the Showgrounds astroturf tonight (Tuesday) from 8-10pm.

Last season, Ballymena men’s 1st XI started fairly sluggishly and at Christmas found themselves mid-table.

However, post-Christmas, Ballymena went on an 11 match unbeaten run with only Ballynahinch above them in the table and promotion all of a sudden seemed a realistic target. After a hard fought promotion play-off match with PSNI, Ballymena fell just short but ended the season with impressive statistics of P18, W12, L4, D2.

Last season saw the progression of a number of junior players into the 1st XI squad and it is hoped that with the experienced gained last season, the team can consolidate and realistically surpass last season’s third place finish.

Meanwhile, Ballymena men’s 2nd XI also enjoyed their most successful season to date and which accumulated in promotion to Junior 5. This season presents a whole new challenge to the team but one which they are looking forward to.

So if you are considering it, then pick up the challenge and join in. The club will be pleased to see all past, present and new faces. New members are always welcome, whether schoolboy, adult or ‘veteran’.
