Men’s team seek new recruits

The pre-season for Larne Men’s Hockey Club is getting well under way with fitness on Monday evenings from 7pm at Antiville playing fields, while training on Wednesday nights will be technical from 7pm-9pm at Greenland astro-pitch as of next week (July 25).

Darren Haveron takes the captain’s reins again for the season ahead and hopes to see old and new faces attending both sessions.

“We are now moving into our fourth season of rebuilding the club and trying to expand the hockey community in the town in co-operation with Larne Ladies,” he added.

“In order for that to continue we are seeking new and old faces to join the playing squad, from the age of 15 and above. All levels of ability are welcome as the club possesses the relative qualified coaches.”

The men’s team finished in a respectable position in a highly competitive Senior League Two, while reaching the semi-final of the Sussex Regiment Cup. The club have also recently hosted boys junior coaching - the first in 10 years - and their second successful annual Hockey Sevens tournament, which was over 14 clubs.

Darren said: “I would encourage anyone to get involved in hockey, from any age. It is a sport which requires the combination of skill, strength, speed and teamwork. At Larne the game is enjoyed in a light-hearted yet competitive manner, as seen in our players representing Ulster (Junior Team) and indeed Ireland (Masters).”
