Michael takes fifth

MICHAEL Dunlop finished in fifth position in the opening race of the one-make Triumph ParkinGO series at Valencia in Spain on Sunday.

The 21-year-old from Ballymoney was competing for Team BE1 Racing on a Triumph Daytona Triple and described the trip as the perfect opportunity to clock up some valuable track miles ahead of the road racing season, which blasts off at the Cookstown 100 later this month.

"We didn't get much track time to learn the new bike, but this was some experience," Dunlop said.

"I changed the rear spring in the bike after qualifying fifth in practice, but it turned out to be the wrong move."

Dunlop is now planning to race at the next round of the series, which is held as a support race at the European rounds of the World Superbike Championship, at Assen in the Netherlands in two weeks' time.

"I'll have to get some of dad's old videos out and get a look at the Assen circuit," he said.

"Maybe Phillip McCallen will lend me a wee Triple for a bit of easy touring before then."
