Mid-Antrim men’s Zone dream ‘Done’ and dusted

MID-ANTRIM’S hopes of winning the Boomer Cup for the Inter-Zone Championship for the first time since 2006 were ended at the first hurdle by Donegal on Saturday.

Both sides have been involved at the later stages of the competition in recent years and a close game was expeected.

Rink 1 saw T Lithco, J McWhirter, J Millar and R Fleming in opposition to D McClintock. Donegal started quickly in this game and at the 6 ends stage were leading by 1-8.

The Mid Antrim rink then came back into the game with a count of 4 and 2 singles closing the gap. A 2 for the donegal rink on the last end left the final score as 7-10

Rink 2 saw M Wilson, G Wilson, W Caldwell and G Lithco in opposition to PJ Gallagher.

Play was tight in the early stahes of the game but by the 7th end, a count of 3 for the donegal rink made the score 2-8. The mid antrim rink fought back well in the last 3 ends with a 2 and a 3 against a single left the final score as 7-9

Rink 3 saw D Duncan, S Shields, N Booth and S Hall in opposition to P McGee. Play was tight in this game with only 12 shots being scored over the 10 ends. The Donegal rink had a measure of control as they managed to record a 3-9 win.

This meant a half time score of 17-28 and a large hill for the Mid Antrim team to climb in the second half.

Rink 4 saw T Morrison, I Craig, A Duncan and A Morrison in opposition to Irish international skip J Quinn.

Mid Antrim started quickly in this game with a 3 and a 5 allowing them to take a 8-2 lead after 3 ends. The Donegal rink fought back as they closed the gap to 8-7 after 6 ends.

Both rinks recorded a 3 before aa 2 for donegal gave them the lead for the first time in the game. A single for the home rink left the final rink score as 12-12

Rink 5 saw J Gaston, A Bonnar, B Trimble and B Magrath in oppostion to E Curran.

The Donegal rink started well in this game as they took a 1-9 lead after 4 ends. Both sides recorded a brace of 2s before a count of 2 for the Mid Antrim rink left the final rink score as 7-13 with the last end not required.

Rink 6 saw W Fullerton, R Rodgers , W Morrison and D Morrison in opposition to A Steele.

Play was tight in the early stages of this game with the score tied at 3-3 afetr 4 ends.

A single for the Donegal rink was their last scoring act in the game as the Mid Antrim rink dominated the second half of the game with a count of 4 on the last end the icing on the cake to record a 11-4 win.

This meant a win for the Donegal team with Mid Antrim now moving into the plate competition where they will face East Antrim in the second round.
