Reserves fell to single point extra-time defeat in semi-final of the Graham Cup

Having defeated Lissan Reserves in the quarter-final, Greenlough’s Reserves travelled to Magherafelt on Sunday 24th March, to take on the host’s Thirds team with a place in the final up for grabs.

With a lot of the country under snow, the pitch at Magherafelt was in great condition, and even managed to have some sunshine despite a strong and bitter wind blowing up the field.

The home side took that wind advantage into the first half and were leading by two at the break. Despite Greenlough gaining a lot of possesion and and scoring the first goal through Cathal McGurk, and points from Ruairi McGlinchey, Diarmuid Clarke and Christopher Maguire; Magherafelt replied with a goal of their own, and used the breeze to gain the advantage in the points count.

With the wind now in favour, the visitors began to quickly close the gap, with a long range free from Christopher Maguire and a point from Cathal McGurk levelling. Despite a further point from Damian McTeague and Greenlough continuing to have chances, too many went wide, allowing Magherafelt to find an equalising point before the full time whistle.

Magherafelt took the advantage in the first 10 minute period of extra time when they found the back of the net, while Greenlough’s only reply was Cathal McGurk’s point.

With the wind back in their favour Greenlough again put a lot of pressure on the homeside, but as was the case in normal time, they were wasteful in front of goal with a number of wides. Seamus Graham brough the side’s level with two points, but a late score from Magherafelt ensured they progressed to the Graham Cup Final on a score line of Magherafelt 2-7 Greenlough 1-9.

Team: Darren Brown (c), Paidi Totten, Ciaran Cassidy, Martin Henry, Kevin McDonnell, Christopher Lagan, Niall Kearney, Seamus Graham 0-2, Michael Clarke, Damian McTeague 0-1, Ruairi McGlinchey 0-1, Cathal McGurk 1-02, Mark Tohill, Christopher Maguire 0-2, Diarmuid Clarke 0-1. Subs: John Og McPeake for R McGlinchey, Christopher Kearney for M Henry, Brian O’Neill for C Maguire, Liam Quinn for P Totten, Fergal Clarke, Sean Tohill, Connor Madden.
