Mighty McMullan seals the points for Limavady ladies

LIMAVADY and Knockbreda played out a six-goal thriller at the Showgrounds last Wednesday night. Both teams began the match at a fast pace but it was Knockbreda who settled first with some good passing and build up play.

Within the opening five minutes Knockbreda rattled the goal frame from a free kick before more pressure down the right wing saw Limavady's defence tested. Limavady continued to soak up the pressure until midway through the first half when a through ball played Rebekah McMullan in, bringing the first of many great saves from the Knockbreda goalkeeper.

Again Limavady broke on the counter with Aimee Millar opting to lob the goalkeeper resulting in another reflex save. Knockbreda's best effort of the first half fell to their midfielder, who from 25 yards out drove her shot just wide of the mark. Limavady's pressure was rewarded on 35 minutes when Aimee Millar sped into the box to make it 1-0 to Limavady.

Minutes later an exchange of passes between Louise McAllister and Rebekah McMullan saw McMullan place the ball into the bottom corner of the goal for 2-0.

The second half saw Knockbreda come out fighting with shots from both forwards testing Sarah Lemon in Limavady's goal. Knockbreda continued to push forward with their striker first seeing her hard-driven shot saved and moments later watched as her perfectly curled shot was collected by Lemon.

The visitors had to wait until the hour mark when, from a corner, their forward found space to guide her header past the goalkeeper to half the deficit. Limavady retaliated in kind and could have scored again if not for the quick reactions of Knockbreda's midfielder, who tracked back to deny Louise McAllister an otherwise certain goal.

But Limavady's top scorer didn't have to wait much longer as the persistant running from Allison McKeegan on the wing found her rounding the keeper before squaring the ball for Louise McAllister to convert into an open net, 3-1.

Knockbreda continued to play their passing game, controlling the midfield and catching Limavady off guard when a well placed through ball and an equally well timed run saw their striker out pace everyone to coolly slot home from the edge of the box cutting Limavady's lead to one goal.

The game was sealed for Limavady four minutes from time when Rebekah McMullan showed tireless legs to sprint into the penalty area, before sliding home Limavady's fourth goal and her second of the night..
