Millpark Seconds endure a four wicket defeat

It was a perfect day for playing cricket, apart from the gusting wind, squally rain and cold temperature. Several members of the Tullylish team were pleased to be reaquainted with Mike Kwelu, who was formerly captain of Bangor Seconds and a friendly opponent from some years ago.

Millpark batted first, hoping that Stuart McCart would be able to repeat the century he scored in his last game. Unfortunately it was not to be. McCart was out without scoring, as the innings got off to a slow start.

The damp wicket, thick grass and big boundaries were not conducive to a high scoring game. Partly as a result of the circumstances, the Millpark innings never really got out of second gear. Rob Hubert, John Simpson, Ryan McCart and Darrell Martin all got starts, but could not push on.

Respectability at least was reached as veteran Johnny Breen and specialist ‘finisher’ Ian McCart ensured all the overs were used. They put on an undefeated 20 runs at the end as the innings finished on 92.

Although the result was never really in doubt, there were some notable and encouraging performances from Millpark in the field.

Jason Maxwell bowled his six overs for just nine runs. He took one wicket, and conceded no runs off his last 26 deliveries. Young Robyn Sinton continued his good form, bowling with great accuracy and maturity to record figures of 2-20. Both his wickets pegged back the top of the batman’s off stump, surely the most rewarding way for any bowler to take his wickets.

The biggest cheer of the day however went to George Chambers. A real club man with a great attitude, Chambers took his first wicket for Millpark, ending with figures of 1-6.

The game eventually ended in a four wicket defeat for the Millpark team, but it was pleasing to see the young players, especially Robyn Sinton making such good progress.
