Minors relinquish their Ulster Crown

Tyrone 1-14

Armagh 0-5

Armagh Minors failed to reach the dizzy heights of last season, losing their Ulster crown to a highly effective Tyrone outfit at St. Tiernach’s Park in Clones.

The provincial decider was bossed by the young Red Hand side who strolled home on a large scoreline thanks to a spread of nine scorers over the sixty minutes.

In contrast, Armagh got just two of their starting fifteen onto the scoresheet. Paul McGeown hit two points, with Ryan Rafferty grabbing the other. Crossmaglen’s Ryan Conlon, who was introduced after the break, also hit a brace of points.

While the young Orchard side’s All-Ireland title is safe for the moment, considering that the back-door system gives them a second chance, their next outing against Cork will be an extremely difficult challenge.

St. Peter’s youngster Aaron Finden was drafted into the midfield sector in place of injured captain Peter Carragher, but the captain’s absence was not used as an excuse by team manager Paul McShane.

He said, “Peter was a big miss, but these things happen in football. All the boys will know that they can play better than this and a good performance against Cork can throw us back into the mix.”

On the day, Armagh’s scoring opportunities were scarce. Colin Stevenson had a goal chance saved in the second half, just before Tyrone found the net, but a huge difference in class separated the sides at the finish with Tyrone fully deserving of their twelve points victory.
