Mitchell inspires Carrick despite defeat to Duns

Carrick Ladies Hockey Club 1st XI’s disappointing season continued last Saturday as they lost 3-0 in a particularly demanding task away to league leaders Dungannon.

Fielding both the highest goalscoring line-up and the most frugal defensive line-up in the entire Senior Two league, Dungannon got off to a confident start with a goal in the third minute of the game followed by another mid way into the first half.

Having struggled initially to get back into the match, Carrick inspired by their midfield Player of the Match Chloe Mitchell, were by far the more impressive attacking side throughout the entire second half.

But all to no avail as the Dungannon defence refused to be broken.

As Carrick began to tire towards the end of the encounter, Dungannon again pressed forward and were the beneficiaries of an slice of good fortune for their third goal when a speculative, but strongly hit, rising ball from well outside the circle glanced off goalkeeper Kerrie Moore’s stick and ricocheted into the Carrick net.

It was particularly undeserved break for Moore who only minutes before had pulled off a superb one-on-one save against a breakaway run by the prolific Dungannon centre forward.

First on the Carrick scoresheet was their ever-impressive midfield dynamo Holly Robinson scoring her third goal of the season, followed by defender Corrie Johnston deservedly netting her first goal for her club and indeed her first-ever in competitive hockey.

Knock briefly threatened to get back into the game but a brace of goals from Ashley McConnell ended all hopes of a home team revival. Carrick’s player of the match was Kelly Waide.
