Mixed bag for O'Neills

Emmets, Cushendun 3-8

Shane O’Neills, Glenarm 1-18

KICKING off the new league season on a cold but bright Wednesday evening, two points apiece were exchanged before, in the 10th minute Shane O’Connell raced clear from his marker, and coming from the left wing shot low to the Glenarm net to give the home team a three point lead in this ACHL Division 3 encounter.

The goal did nothing to spur on either team and in the remaining 20 minutes of the first half only two more points each were scored, along with a bagful of squandered chances for both sides.

The visitors hit the ground running in the second half and within four minutes were level, but just a minute later a second goal for the home team undid all the good work.

Glenarm again fought back to level pegging, when a third goal for Emmets opened up a three-point gap. The men in blue began to lift their game and it paid dividends when, in the 25th minute, with the home team one point ahead, Ciaran Campbell broke free on the right and fired home low to the left corner to give Shane O’Neills the lead for the first time.

Two further points from Conal Ward and Darren Hamill gave the visitors a four-point victory.
