Mixed fortunes for veterans sides

BALLYMENA Veterans III 28, Antrim Lawn 31: Ballymena Vets 3 had a home match against Antrim Lawn last week. Each team had a rink win but it was the visitors who claimed the extra points on offer with an overall shots win.

Jimmy Alexander, Edwin Donaghy, Lyle McQuitty and Don McKee were involved in a low scoring game against J Greenaway on rink 2.

There were 6 singles scored over the first 6 ends however the seventh end proved to be the turning point of the game when the visitors scored a count of 3 shots to open up a 5 shot lead. The Antrim rink gradually extended their lead over the remainder of the game to go on and record a 17-9 victory.

On rink 3 Joe Kyle, Keith Burnett, Robert Mark and Billy Scullion were level after 6 ends against R McCullough with the score board reading 6-6.

The game then swung in favour of the visitors when they won 5 of the next 8 ends to take a 6 shot lead, but the Ballymena men were not to be beaten and scored 11 unanswered shots over the remaining ends to win by 19 shots to 14.

Ballymena Veterans IV 45, Glengormley II 26: Ballymena Vets 4 made the journey to Glengormley last week and it was a good day for the Ballymena men who claimed maximum points.

On rink 1 Eddie Leckey, Clifford Duncan, Roy Kernohan and Jackie Barr trailed by a shot after 5 ends against A Kelly however the remainder of the game was dominated by the Ballymena men who won the next 8 ends.

They scored a total of 20 shots during this period and there was no way back for the home rink as the Braid rink went on to claim a fine victory by 27 shots to 9.

There was a very close match on rink 2 where Sammy Rainey, Jimmy Maybin, Joe McKernan and Jim Cameron took on B Garrett. The Glengormley men made the better start and after 4 ends they lead by 5 shots, but the visitors hit back to win 9 of the next 12 ends to open up a 4 shot lead with only 2 ends remaining.

It was a tense finish with the home rink wining both of the final ends however they could only score a total of 3 shots as the Ballymena rink held out for a 18-17 victory.
