Mixed fortunes in Ulster Cup first round

MIXED fortunes were the order of the day in the first round of the Ulster Cup with four of our local teams progressing.

Portstewart, winners under the captaincy of Paddy McLaughlin in 2003, had a comfortable win over Faughan Valley 10.5 to 3.5 and will now meet Knock GC in round two.

Royal Portrush GC, 2004 winners, prevailed over Manor GC 9 to 5 and will face Donegal neighbours Greencastle GC. Gracehill GC ran out 8-6 winners against Killymoon for the privilege of meeting Banbridge in round two. Castlerock GC, after a bye in round one, are to meet Ballymena GC. Second round matches are to be completed by 24th May

Clubs on the wrong side of some close scoring matches were Kilrea GC who lost to Blackwood GC, Bushfoot GC lost to Clogher Valley, Ballycastle fell to Ballybofey/Stranorlar GC, Rathmore GC lost to Greenacres GC and Roe Park GC exited to Slieve Russell GC.
