Mixed week for Magherafelt Titans

THE 2010/11 basketball season started in earnest this week for Magherafelt Titans, with all four junior and two senior squads in action.

Andersonstown Tigers 65

Titans 64

The Premier league squad made their debut in the Premier B league with a tricky tie away to Andersonstown Tigers.

Titans players were anxious about making the transition into the higher tier, but they turned in a really good performance and led by fourteen points, before going down in the end by the narrowest of margins losing 65pts – 64pts.

Limavady Lightning 59

The Men’s Division 1 team opened their league campaign with a home win over Limavady Lightening. Craig Fullerton led the Titans in scoring as the second string, a blend of youth and experience made their league debut and got their season off to the best possible start, winning 35pts- 24pts.

Ulster Elks 35

Titans U19 Boys 24

The U19 Boys made the journey to the University of Ulster Jordanstown, to take on the Ulster Elks. The Titans squad, consisting mainly of U18 players, played well but succumbed to the older stronger Elks going down 35pts – 24pts.

S. Henry led the Titans scoring with 9pts but the boys know that they will have to improve their scoring rate if they are to win games.

Letterkenny Blaze 51

Letterkenny Blaze came to Magherafelt at the weekend and in the first of three games they proved too strong for a young Titans U14 Boys squad.

Titans, playing their first ever competitive game, were slow to start and struggled early on allowing the visitors to dominate the opening two quarters. But the young Titans showed great spirit and improvement as the game went on but in the end they couldn’t undo the damage of the opening two quarters and went down 21pts – 51pts.

Titans U16 Girls were next on court and edged in front, after a close and low scoring first quarter. Titans hit a great spell, during the second period when the local girls hit ten points without reply. This put Titans in a commanding position, but a spirited comeback in the third quarter saw Blaze cut the deficit before Titans finally managed to kill the game off in the final quarter.

Letterkenny Blaze 21

In the last of the trilogy of games, Titans U19 Girls, making their league debut, recorded an opening day win.

It was a close and exciting game with Titans edging the first quarter before Blaze staged a comeback to go in front at half-time.

Titans recaptured the lead in the third quarter and held a four points lead going into the final quarter, but once again Blaze came back strong. Play swung from end to end and the game could have gone either way but in the end Titans determination and hard work in defence saw them hold out the visitors and at the buzzer Titans won 24pts – 21pts.
