Mixed week for Veteran teams

Ballymena Veterans 1 (33) Mossley (35)

BALLYMENA Vets 1 travelled to Mossley last week. Both teams recorded clear cut victories however it was the home team who claimed the extra points for the overall score.

On rink 2 Jimmy Shields, Dessie Shaw, Jim Cameron and Davy Balmer were drawn against G Hall and it was the home rink who made the early running and after 5 ends they had established a 3 shot lead. The Ballymena rink then hit a rich vein of form winning 11 of the remaining ends to record a comprehensive 22-7 victory.

Sammy Rainey, Roy Kernohan, Alex Wilson and John Millar took on B Nutt on rink 3 and they did not make the best of starts when they conceded a full house of 8 shots on the third end and this set the tone for the remainder of the day. The Braid men did manage to win the next 3 ends to trail by 9 shots to 5, however the home rink continued to score heavily over the remainder of the game to run out victors by 28 shots to 11.

Ballymena Veterans 2 (42) Nortel (26)

Ballymena Vets 2 entertained Nortel last Monday and it was a good day for the Braid men who collected all of the points on offer.

The Ballymena rink of Gary Shaw, Derek Greer, Peter Millar and Arnold Kenny made a great start against N Haffern on rink 4 and after 5 ends they had established a 11-1 lead. The remainder of the game was closer and the visitors were actually able to get within 4 shots of the Ballymena men, but the home rink finished strongly to record a fine 19-11 victory.

The scores were level at 6-6 after 8 ends on rink 5 where Allen Stewart, Liam Lyness, Robert McCready and Harold Smyth took on T Hunter. The visitors then won the next 3 ends to establish a 9 shot lead, however the Ballymena rink dominated the remainder of the game when they won the last 7 ends to claim victory by 23 shots to 16.

Mossley were the visitors to the Old Ballymoney Road green last week where they took om Ballymena Vets 3. Both teams teams had a rink win but it was the visitors who claimed the extra points on offer.

On rink 2 Bill Wood, Jimmy Alexander, Rowly Woods and Don McKee were drawn against J Kelly and it was a tough day for the home rink. The visitors dominated the first part of the match and they lead by 11 shots to 2 after 8 ends, however 13 shots conceded over the next 3 ends saw the Mossley rink take total charge of the game. To their credit the Ballymena men did not give up and they won 6 of the remaining ends to leave the final score 26-11 in favour of the visiting rink.

Joe Kyle, Tommy Crooks, Keith Burnett and Billy Scullion took on the Mossley rink skipped by W Hamilton on rink 3. They made a tremendous start to their game winning the first 5 ends to race in to a 13-0 lead. The visitors however hit back over the next 8 ends to get on level terms with the Braid rink with the score at 15-15, however Scullion’s men finished strongly and eventually went on to win the game by 23 shots to 16.
