Mo scoops first prize at Lady Captain's Day

IT was Lady Captain's Day at Portstewart Golf Club on Saturday and 87 ladies played a medal round on the Strand Course to compete for the Lady Captain Christine Hutchinson 's prize.

The winner was Mo Giffin (20) with 71 nett. Best gross was Lesley Hemphill (60) with 83 gross. Runner up was Anne Paul (23) 72 nett over Clare Harley (22) also 72 nett. Front 9 was won by Rosie Fulton (28) 48 gross and back 9 by Sheelagh Duffy (18) 43 gross. The committee prize was won by Maggie Penny (15) 74 gross. Ina Bratton (18) won the golden girl prize with 77 gross.

Lady Captain’s guests played nine holes on the Strand. The male visitors prize was won by William Oakes and the ladies was won by Margaret McCurdy.

An 18 hole stableford competition was played by 28 ladies on the Riverside Course. Hilary Farrell (33) with 42 points was the winner and Joan Lenfesty (29) with 38 points was runner up. Front 9 was won by Catherine Boyle (36) with 20 points and back 9 by Claire Tweed (36) with 18 points.

Thirty-eight men competed for the men’s prize playing 18 holes on the Riverside and the winner was Gerry McNamee over Frank Farrell with 44 points. The golden girl’s prize was won by Liz Young.

In spite of the mixed weather a very enjoyable and successful day was concluded with prize giving, dinner and entertainment in the club house.

On May 26, 48 ladies played stableford greensomes in Australian Spoons Qualifying Competition on the Strand Course to qualify for the final in Newtownstewart on July 27. The winners were Jean Robinson and Kathleen McIlfatrick (27) with 41 points and runners up were Ina Bratton and Rosie Millar (20) with 40 points. In third place were Clare and May Johnston (24)with 34 points.

Seventeen ladies played the Riverside Course on May 26 and the voucher was won by Liz Weston (28) with 22 points and runner up was Carol Diamond (35) with 20 points.
