Montgomery’s late strike secures Greenisland win

Greenisland dominated play in the early stages, attacking up both wings with Dawn Montgomery and Erin McMaw prominent. This pressure soon told and, after winning a series of short corners, they edged in front when Carrick defender Robyn Poots turned the ball into her own net with seven minutes gone.

Carrick began to come back into the game but the defence of Ruth Creaney, Chloe Carlin, Claire Mayne and Emma Curtis made some timely tackles to keep them out. Carrick also asked questions of Greenisland ‘keeper Leah Crooks from two short corners.

The game was stopped for more than 30 minutes after Carrick’s Ashley McConnell sustained a head injury.

Amy Cross had the ball in the net only for the umpire to rule it out, but Carrick did level matters through Kelly Waide.

The game looked to be heading for a draw but with two minutes left, Montgomery drove into the circle and slipped the ball past the Carrick keeper from a tight angle.
