Monthly medal and medal final at Royal Portrush

ROYAL Portrush Golf Club held a monthly medal on Saturday and three handicap Paddy O'Donnell took the honours with his net 69.

A birdie two at the sixth balanced a bogey five at the fifth for a gross 36 out. Paddy went into cruise control on the return nine where he parred all nine for another 36 and a nett 69.

Dr Ian Kerr (4) took the silver prize with another 69. Birdies at the par five fifth and the par three sixth were equalled by a double bogey six at the eighth for his 36 out.

Consecutive birdies, a four at ten and a two at eleven, got Ian off to a good back nine but a series of bogies pegged him back and even with a further birdie four at seventeen he needed a par at the final hole to get a win. A bogey five was carded and kept Ian in silver spot. W Robert Barry held the bronze place with his nett 71. Out in 43 Robert produced a much steadier back nine with only three bogies and a gross 39 adding up to 71 net. This was enough to win the Medal Final where the runner-up was Club Captain John Bamber with his 76 net.

Best gross prize was lifted by Gerald McAleese for his effort of 72. 37 out, with a birdie two at the third, was followed by a 35 on the back nine. This included a birdie four at the tenth followed by a birdie two at the eleventh. Two shots were dropped at twelve and fourteen but another bird was netted at fifteen to secure his prize.
