More medals for BCC’s McAllister!

In a weekend of horrendous weather conditions with rain and high winds buffeting the 97 riders who signed on at Carrigan’s GAA club.

The 10 mile TT is the Blue Ribbon event the Prix de l’arc Triomphe or the Epsom derby of bicycle racing, all the peddling greyhounds were assembled to do battle on the Toome-Castledawson dragstrip.

All the technology is used to shave the vital seconds off the times of these fast cyclists who travel at 30 mph average generating upwards of 400 watts of power.

Low profile frames, disc wheels, crbon fibre and titanium are the order of the day and the powerful and very successful BCC Biesty’s team were there to attempt to claim another gold medal in the team category.

The BCC riders are winners of the Ulster 50 mile TT team championships and have recorded personal best times in the recent weeks.

But with a lot of riders not starting due to terrible weather conditions and punctures on the silk walled tyres reducing the chances of the riders.

Ballymoney’s Mervyn Linton punctured less than 1 mile from the start and that was the end of the team prize.

But the fast legs of the Ballymoney rider Steven McAllister tore round the course in 22 minutes and secured a bronze medal behind recent Ulster champion Sean McIntyre and just home from the Commonwealth Games, An Post professional rider Marcus Christie took the podium places.

ON THE MILLBRAE

The tough and lung searing climb of 1500m from the Finvoy Road to the Mullan Rd is used by some clubs to sort out the climbers from the mere mortals who cycle on the flat lands...light weights and specialists like David Gardner and local rider Jason Henry.

Jason last year equalled the 20 year record of 3minutes and 7 seconds, but was 7 seconds slower this year in what is becoming an annual pilgrimage by riders from all over to take part.

Two young riders from Carn Wheelers, Emma and Sarah Elder, made the journey to the summit along with coming into good form U15 rider Robbie Doherty, and schoolboys Arthur Taggart and Shay Donley.

Getting the lungs well opened was Chris Surgeoner, Chris is going in a couple of weeks time to Canada for the “World Triathlon Championships”. Winner of the “Grimpeurs Trophy” was 10TT club and road race championshipwinner Steven McAllister.

Ballymoney CC this Wednesday night are holding the Balnamore Road Race on the Glenstall, Bendooragh circuit, sign on at the Balnamore Community Centre from 6.30pm Racing from 7.15/30pm. The interclub league final round is being held in Tobermore hosted by Carn Wheelers at 7pm
