More misery for a very gutsy AFC

Bourneview 3

Banbridge AFC 1

A trip away to Portadown was on the cards for the Boys Club this week, taking on a mid table Bourneview side.

Bourneview were on the score-sheet within the first minute when a long ball was knocked forward and a defensive mix up allowed their striker to ghost in and slot the ball home with ease. Not the start AFC wanted or needed but soon they found their feet and created a few half chances of their own.

Bourneview scored again on 23 minutes to put AFC 2-0 down, the ball somehow squeezing past McAlinden on the back post from a corner. This came after an excellent spell from AFC, seeing several opportunities go begging. As half time approached, AFC were further disappointed with Bourneview taking a 3-0 lead.

Without a doubt the AFC lads came out in the second half showing great courage, dedication and commitment, so much so that Manager Beattie commented after the match that the players attitudes “made me proud to be associated with the club”.

Right through the squad, man of the match performances came from several players and none more deserving than goal-scorer Jon Lennon, returning to the club after a brief spell away. He showed his worth with a box to box performance from midfield. Indeed other players too stepped up to the plate with veterans Canning and Gary Spiers giving all they had. Worth a mention was Gareth Cargin, the full back filling in at centre back and proving impervious in the second half. Matthew Topley also put in a very strong first start of the season at right back.

After a difficult few weeks for the Boys Club, Beattie commented how those players who took to the field on Saturday had the guts to make up for the disappointing first half, which gave him belief that if they can recreate the same passion more consistently AFC will soon get their much needed first win.
