Coates at the double to win David Wood Memorial

Newtownabbey’s Nikki Coates won the first David Wood Memorial Trophy at Bishopscourt on Saturday after he claimed a Supersport double.

The Ballyrobert rider did just enough to see off Robert Kennedy by 0.140 seconds in race one before eclipsing Jamie Patterson by three tenths of a second in race two.

The delighted 25-year-old was presented with his trophies from Lee Wood (David’s widow). “This is a great honour for me to win the David Wood Memorial trophy in its first year. Davy was a great family friend so it will take pride of place in the Coates house,” he said.

“He was a fantastic ambassador for the sport and brought such a lot to it, some of which went unnoticed. I think we all miss him. He was such a great personality in racing and someone who is proving very difficult to replace.

“Hopefully this meeting will go on from strength to strength and Davy’s name will be remembered through it for years to come.

“It was nice to win again. I have had a tough time in the British Championship this season so to come home and win is pretty special and I would like to thank everyone who has supported me this year, especially the Newtownabbey Council. Thanks also to the boys for helping me over the last few races.”
