Dollingstown teenager Jack is one to watch

The 17-year-old from Dollingstown moved from trials at the end of last year and took first place in his debut at the Sunflower.

Jack, a mechanical engineer by trade, is a former pupil of Waringstown Primary School, Lurgan Junior High and Lurgan College.

He is racing this season in the 125 to 250cc class but is set to move into the 600cc bikes next season.

“Both my husband and I have been involved in trials so Jack was always involved in bikes from an early age,” said Jacqueline.

“I sort out his entries for the year and when he is racing I do the pit board for him.”

Jack started riding trials when he was 14, his first proper introduction to riding bikes competitively.

He received great help and encouragement from Mervyn Hanlon from the Banbridge and District Motorcycle

Club.

“I enjoy most aspects of motorcycling, but short circuit racing in particular because of how fast and how close the racing is compared to other kinds of motorbike racing, also there is nothing better than the feeling of winning,” said Jack.

His first race win was at Kirkistown on Easter Monday this year.

“It felt incredible to win as it was such a close race from start to finish, plus it being my first championship race it was also a massive bonus.

“Targets for this year are to finish in the top three in the championship which is a huge challenge as I have missed two rounds so far.

“Looking ahead I’m very excited to be changing to a 600 bike next year and due to the difference in speed, it may take a while to get used to it but I am is looking forward to it.”

Dad Brian and mum Jacqueline ride trial bikes along with Jack at the weekends not race bikes - they just leave the competitive side of things to their son.
