Ian Lougher signs off with a win at Dundrod

Welsh rider Ian Lougher toasted his final appearance at the Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix with a hard-fought 18th victory in the 125cc race.

Lougher held on narrowly to take the win on his Honda from Christian Elkin.

Now based in Dromara, Lougher is the second most successful rider ever at the event behind Ulster road racing hero Joey Dunlop, who notched up 24 wins at Dundrod.

ILR Kawasaki British championship team boss Lougher announced in June that he would retire from road racing at the end of the season.

The 50-year-old made his decision following the death of Japanese rider Yoshinari Matsushita in a crash at the Isle of Man TT, who previously rode on the Mountain Course for Lougher.

Said the Welshman, “I just missed out on a rostrum in the opening 600 race, and on the 125 Christian Elkin and I passed each other a few times on the last lap. It was nice to have a 125 win to finish my UGP career.

“Big thanks go to everyone who has supported me through the years, all my sponsors and the fans.”

Meanwhile Banbridge rider Shaun Anderson was eighth in the Townparks Vauxhall Lightweight race.
