Irwin in the points at British GP

Carrick’s Graeme Irwin scored his first-ever World Championship points at last Sunday’s British MX1 Grand Prix in the searing heat at Matterley Basin.

The 20-year-old was riding for the Italian JK Racing team and qualified 21st fastest for his races. In race one he finished 18th and in his second race he was 21st by the chequered flag.

“I was happy with my race one result as I felt that I had ridden well, but in race two I was disappointed in my performance,” he told the Times. “I was pleased, though, at scoring three World Championship points as it was my first time on the 450cc Yamaha. I will ride again for the team in a couple of weeks at the Belgium Grand Prix and I am already looking forward to the trip.

“It was a great experience at the weekend but I will be back with my usual Emberson Yamaha team this weekend at Hawkestown Park for the British championship,” added Graeme.

Red Bull KTM’s Tony Cairoli wrapped up decisive wins in both MX1 motos of the British GP to further extend his lead in the 2012 World Championship. The Italian now has a 55-point lead over Clement Desalle as he edges closer to a possible sixth world title.
