Irwin set to hit the road

Carrick’s Glenn Irwin has talked about competing in one of the big three international road races for quite a while, but the talking is over. The 24-year-old will ride at next month’s Ulster Grand Prix.

It’s a big step for a rider who lies fifth in the British Supersport Championship, but he’s confident he will make a successful debut on the roads.

“I have been interested in doing the NW 200 but it didn’t happen for one reason or another but I feel good,” Irwin said. “I am riding well this season and my confidence is high, so I believe that now is the time to go ahead and take the step.

“I posted a photo on Facebook from Deer’s Leap (a fast right-hand bend on the Dundrod circuit) and asked the question: ‘Where is this?’

“One of the replies came from Noel Johnston the Ulster GP clerk of the course asking if I fancied a run at the race. It all started from there and Noel has been fantastic ever since. He set the wheels in motion, sorting the 650 Kawasaki of Robbie Sylvester for me to race in the Supertwins races in both the Dundrod 150 and Ulster Grand Prix.”

He added: “The organisers have made many safety improvements since my dad (Alan Irwin) raced there and the road surface is very good. With plenty of track time I hope to be competitive.

“Brian Reid, the former Formula Two world champion and William Dunlop, who I am very friendly with, have said they will help me learn the place and I am sure my dad will have a few words of wisdom. I am nervous but really looking forward to the whole experience.”

Irwin also revealed he plans to ride at the Isle of Man TT, the NW 200 and the Ulster Grand Prix next season.”
