January date for freedom ceremony

Friday, January 17 is the date with a daytime ceremony organised since Michael has another date that same evening.

Stars of the motor bike world are expected to attend and local councillors will honour the occasion by their presence.

The formal proceedings will be conducted by council officials and the Mayor, Councillor John Finlay, and the occasion will not only reflect the standing of Michael Dunlop in the road racing world, but will also give great satisfaction to the man who nominated him, Alderman Bill Kennedy.

The DUP representative has always had a close association with the world of motor bikes and since its inception several years ago, has been Clerk of Course at Armoy Road Races. His late brother Frank, was part of the Armoy Armada along with Robert, Joey and Jim Dunlop.

Michael Dunlop and his brother, William, have carried on the tradition and Ballymoney Council had no hesitation in endorsing Alderman Kennedy’s notice of motion calling for the Freedom ceremony.

Alderman Kennedy wants Michael’s fans to have an opportunity of sharing in the occasion in a meet and greet session.

The council rubber-stamped the motion on October 7 of this year and councillors lined-up to give their support. Michael will become the third member to receive the award.
