McGuinness '˜super proud' of his brother charity cycle on TT course

John McGuinnes's brother, Kurt joined fellow ex-RAF serviceman Stuart Robinson to raise over £3000 for injured soldiers by riding a lap of the TT course on hand cycles last weekend.

Braving high winds and driving rain the duo, who call themselves Team Legless, completed the circuit in just over 5 hours.

Manx based MotoGP star, Cal Crutchlow appeared out of the mountain mist at one point to wish the pair good luck in their challenge.

“I am in tatters” Kurt said afterwards. “I was crying because I was in so much pain! From May Hill to Hailwood’s Rise we were soaked to the skin and frozen to the bone with the wind in our faces.”

Robinson, who suffered 38 separate fractures and lost both his legs after being injured in an IED attack on his vehicle whilst serving with the RAF Regiment in Afghanistan in 2013, agreed it was a tougher challenge than he had imagined.

“But we wanted to help raise money to help repay the charities that have helped me since I was injured and to raise awareness that you can still lead a full and active life even after suffering injuries like mine.”

The pair received support from TT physio Isla Scott and were cheered on by members of the Manx Constabulary who travelled alongside them.

Stuart said after finishing the challenge: “The ride was an amazing experience, definitely not helped by the weather – but that was one factor we couldn’t change.

“We were making good time up to Sulby and then we hit the inclines where things became a bit more strenuous.

“The mountain section was pretty demanding. The closing in of the fog and mist made it extremely difficult to view the road ahead and was often like cycling blind!

“When we started the downhill ride, things obviously got easier and the whole team’s spirits were lifted,” he added.

“I have total respect for the guys doing this.” 23 times TT winner, John McGuinness said as he congratulated Stuart and Kurt.

“After all that Stuart has gone through it is incredible and I am super proud of him and my brother. I had a broken wrist a couple of years ago and I did a lot of whinging about that because it was so sore.I can’t even begin to imagine what Stuart has been through.”
