Motorbikes: Irwin signs new deal for 2013

Lisburn based Mar-Train Racing this week signed 23-year-old Carrick rider Glenn Irwin to ride alongside recent recruit Stuart Easton in next season’s British Supersport Championship. Both men will ride Yamaha UK supported R6 machinery, with the season getting under way in April at Brands Hatch.

Irwin is a former double Irish Supersport champion and rode for Mar-Train in a one-off appearance in 2011, breaking the Supersport lap record at Kirkistown on the team’s R6 Yamaha. He competed in this season’s British Supersport Championship on a privately backed R6, and received technical support from Mar-Train Racing.

Team owner Tim Martin has been watching Irwin for a couple of seasons, and he believes the timing is almost perfect to bring him into his British championship set-up.

“We’ve been aware of Glenn’s ability for some time, as he’s been around our team for a few years, so we know pretty much everything about him. He’s a confident lad with a lot of raw speed and talent and if we can knock off those rough edges, then I have every confidence he can be a regular front-runner next season. We believe we have the best all-round package in British Supersport with the Yamaha R6 and the Mar-Train Racing team, so I’m looking forward to seeing both Glenn and Stuart added into that ingredient,” said Martin.

Irwin, the reigning British Supersport Cup champion added: “I spoke to Tim about a deal in 2011 for this year, but it was probably a blessing in disguise having to wait another 12 months, which gave me a learning year in the class. I’ve my personal sponsors sorted, and they have been very loyal to me, and coming in to ride alongside such an experienced rider as Stuart is very exciting. I can learn so much from him on and off the track.

“The Mar-Train Yamaha is a proven race winner and, having ridden one this season, I know we can hit the ground running. The team will be putting a big effort in behind the scenes, and I’ll be working hard on my training and diet to come to the first round in the best possible shape and physical condition.”

Glenn will continue to be supported by local businessmen John Erwin and Graham Martin (MET Healthcare), Eddie Stevenson (Megastore247), Michael Atkinson (Valvenet) and CN Trading during his 2013 British Supersport campaign.
