It was 24-year-old Irwin, on the Gearlink Kawasaki, who took the lead on the opening lap with Seeley, aboard the Mar-Train Yamaha, back in 10th still suffering from the effects of a qualifying crash which resulted in elbow and rib injuries. The safety car was deployed after two riders crashed out on the opening lap and stayed out until lap six.

In tricky conditions Irwin held on to his lead until lap 13, at which point Seeley, who had been making steady progress through the pack with one fastest lap after another, made his move. As the rain came back on he passed Irwin pulling away to win by over four seconds and close back to within four points of championship leader, Graeme Gowland.

Irwin, meanwhile, had his hands full with Gowland on the final lap but held on to claim second behind his fellow Carrick rider.
