VIDEO: 1958 North West 200

There have been a lot of changes to the North West 200 from its tentative beginnings over 80 years ago.

The location, the start and the circuit itself have all changed, but the popularity of the event has never waned.

This Pathe News film of the 1958 event shows the bikes starting and finishing down from York Corner in Portstewart before heading along the Promenade and on to Coleraine, where they turn on to the Portrush Road and over Shell Hill Bridge and on towards Portrush.

The archive footage is stunning and shows what the course was like for the riders more than half a century ago.

Jack Brett won the 500cc class on his Norton with an average time of 98.4mph.

Mike Hailwood’s (NSU) made his only racing appearance at the NW 200 in 1958. He finished runner up to Sammy Millar (NSU) in the 250cc race.
