A spokesperson said: “We have Special Olympics Clubs all over the Ulster region and we are aiming to set up a new Club in Magherafelt to offer individuals from this area the chance to join a Club and avail of the many benefits of being involved in Special Olympics which include improved health and fitness, the chance to participate in events and competitions, increased confidence and self-esteem and meeting new people and making friends.

“The meeting we are holding is for any families who may have potential athletes to come along and find out about Special Olympics and how they can get involved. We are also inviting anyone interested in getting involved in the Club as a volunteer to come along and find out more.

Volunteers play a very important role in the running of a successful Special Olympics Club and we are hoping to recruit a team of enthusiastic volunteers to set up and run the Club. Volunteers do not necessarily need to have any sporting background and previous experience is not required – just plenty of enthusiasm!”
