Moyle back to winning ways

Portstewart 0 v 5 Moyle MOYLE FC got back to winning ways in this cup match after a few weeks off due to the recent poor weather and they looked a bit rusty in the opening minutes as Portstewart got into gear quicker.

Moyle could have been two nil down within twenty minutes if Donal McCloy hadn't pulled off some fantastic point-blank saves.

Darren McKillop and Lee Watterson were able to assert their control of midfield after this and Moyle got into their stride with some great first touch football which got its reward in the 32nd minute when James McLister found the net following a Lee Watterson corner.

Portstewart should have equalised in the 35th minute but once again Donal McCloy pulled off a great save and Moyle almost scored themselves from the break.

Moyle heads were up and their fitness started to show as Portstewart tired and found themselves swamped by wave after wave of Moyle attacks.

When Portstewart did attack the Moyle defence held firm with Stephen McAfee, in particular, in fantastic form.

Moyle got the early break in the second half with James McLister getting his second following hard work from Eddie McCloskey who robbed the keeper and passed the ball to Conleth McCaughan who in turn found McLister for a cool shot into the net.

In the 53rd minute Stephen McAfee capped a fantastic performance when he ran the length of the pitch to lob the keeper following good work from Eddie McCloskey and Darren McKillop.

Moyle saw several chances wasted as they pressed forward with Daniel Mooney and Conleth McCaughan both coming close.

In the 76th minute Conleth McCaughan made it 4-0 when he got onto a great through ball from Eddie McCloskey, beat the defender and slotted the ball under the approaching keeper.

It was all Moyle now with Lee Watterson, Conor Kelly and Daniel Mooney all coming close to scoring.

In the 89th minute Eddie McCloskey scored the goal of the game when he ran from the edge of the Moyle box, beat five players, before shooting low past the keeper.

Moyle got an early scare in the first twenty minutes but once they found their rhythm Portstewart couldn't cope. The Moyle defence held firm with Donal McCloy in excellent form in nets and Stephen McAfee having his best game all year, showing unbelievable energy levels throughout the match.

Sol Fox, Martin McGarry and Mark McAreavey were their usual strong unit and Portstewart found them hard to break down.

Midfield and the forwards never lost control after the initial twenty minutes with Darren McKillop, Lee Watterson, Eddie McCloskey, Daniel Mooney, Conleth McCaughan and James McLister working hard throughout the match.
