Moyola anglers host successful Open Day

The event proved a great success with each child catching at least one fish. Organisers wish to thank Glyn McGarry,PSNI Wildlife Branch, for all the hard work he put in to secure a grant to get Bradleys Lake at Tobermore back to perfect condition.Along with Michael McCrory from Magherafelt Council, funding was put in place to get the excavation work carried out.

Gratitude also to the committee of Moyola Angling Club for striving so hard to get the improvements completed in time for the day,Bernie, Teresa and Maura for doing all the cooking, Brian for organising the duck race and excellent prizes.Also the sponsors who were – DCAL for supplying the fish;Tobermore Concrete; Creagh Concrete;Heron Bros. Draperstown; Stanley Aspinall; Patsy McCann; McLean Fuels, Magherafelt; Robert Hueston; Craigmore Trout Fishery; Turnaface Fishery; Crawfords Tackle, Maghera; John Carmichael, World of Owls;Sean Henry and his mate James who painted the site office.Also, anyone who helped in any way in making this event so special for all the children.

The charity competition that took place the following day,had some great craic and banter.Tommy McGrath made a presentation to Henry McGlone, Marie Curie Cancer Care, for the amount of £150. First place in this competition went to Philip Maguire with Brian Bigmore in second. Bradleys Lake is something for the club to be very proud of and deserves respect and care in order for it to remain an excellent asset for the future.Indeed, to this end the lake is now open to Moyola members only while those using it should note that only fly is allowed and there is a total catch and release rule.This is to try and preserve the stocks and thus encourage juvenile members to enjoy the art of fly fishing.

Last competition of another great season, takes place this Saturday. Starting at 10.30am in Castledawson, at stake will be the Gerald McLarnon memorial cup.It is pointed out, that the Gerald Weir trophy for the heaviest brown trout and the Robin McKnight award for the heaviest dollaghan, are still up for grabs.Therefore,it is hoped for a good turn out of members on this final occasion.
